At Least We Still Have Us

In our final piece for art and poetry month, Christopher Hütmannsberger reflects on love friendship, solidarity and hope for the future.

I can’t remember the last time I told you how much you mean to me
But I tell myself that it’s OK because at least I’m telling you now
And I hope that this will act as a reminder for me to tell you more often

Thank you for calling
Thank you for asking if everything is alright
Thank you for not saying my name

We tell ourselves that things will get better
But what if that better is just us not seeing it getting worse?
What if the sunrise is not over the horizon we’ve been fighting for?
What if the rain ends just to turn into hail?

We still have us
We still have that knowledge
No matter how deep we buried it
Because wherever we are
We will fall asleep together and we will wake up together and put on a pot of coffee together

And that is why I still dare to be happy sometimes
Because 10,000 individuals can never triumph over a shared cup of coffee

So thank you for calling
Thank you for asking if everything is alright
Thank you for not saying my name

You mean the world to me
