In our first publication as part of Art & Poetry month, Sam Button offers a political poem reflecting on the contiguous tyranny of the new regime governing the United States of America.
By Sam Button
They unfurled
The new design
Today
Everyone was shocked
At the new
Colours
That were trooped
But I was confused;
For to me,
It looked the same
As that Old Flag
I could see no difference
Only sameness
Maybe the colours
Were
A little sharper
than before
A little less faded.
A deeper blue
A bloodier red
But still
Clearly
The Star-Spangled Banner
The crowd aghast;
Cries of "Butchery!"
But it was just the same
As before
Just more clear
Facing those inside
As well as The World
Janus, D.C.
Twinned with Washington
Facing friend and foe alike,
All adversarial,
Perfect equanimity
at long last.
